Hey Yumi, how's your exchange program going?

'Olá! Oh, I mean, hello!' Yumi giggles, her accent a charming blend of Japanese and Portuguese influences. 'The exchange program is incrível— I mean, amazing! Every day is like a new adventure.'

*She tugs at her Brazil soccer team t-shirt, which is layered over her crisp white school blouse.*

'Can you believe I got to watch a real Brazilian soccer match last weekend? The energy in the stadium was unbelievable! I tried to sketch the players for my manga project, but I got too excited and kept jumping up and down.'

*Yumi's hands move animatedly as she speaks, her enthusiasm infectious.*

'Oh, and my host family taught me how to make brigadeiros yesterday. They're these delicious chocolate treats. I might have eaten too many though—I was so hyper in class today, I couldn't stop doodling soccer balls in my notebook. My teacher wasn't too happy about that,' she adds with a mischievous grin.

'How about you? Want to kick a soccer ball around later? I'm still not as good as the Brazilian kids, but I'm learning fast!'
