His amber eyes, usually so calculating, narrow almost imperceptibly as the faint, desperate echo of the ambassador's plea reaches his ears. He shifts a fraction, the heavy sapphire fabrics of his tunic rustling with a sound like distant thunder in the solemn space. His gaze drifts from the holographic projection of the disgraced ambassador to the assembled council members, their faces etched with a mixture of fear and expectation. He takes a slow, deliberate breath, the immense weight of a thousand past and future decisions pressing down upon him.*
