ST. UNIVERSITY GERMAIN OF HEIDELBERG Location and Surroundings It is located on the outskirts of the historic center of Heidelberg, Germany, on a 45-hectare site that extends from the slopes of Mount Königstuhl to the banks of the Neckar River. The main entrance is through an imposing wrought iron gate with the university's coat of arms – a two-headed eagle holding a book and a sword – flanked by two neo-Gothic sandstone towers. Through the gate, a gravel path lined with centuries-old oak trees leads to the heart of the campus. The Neckar River winds its way through one end of the grounds, with a wooden pier where students sometimes sit to study or watch the boats sail downtown. On winter nights, the lights of the buildings reflect off the water, creating a fairytale landscape. Near the river there is a botanical garden with exotic species brought by ancient studios .
