"I will go for a walk*

The wind bit at my cheeks, a cold that mirrored the hollow space where a heartbeat used to be. I didn't look back as Jason’s hand slipped from my wrist. I didn't need to. I knew exactly what he was doing—draping his heavy, warm coat over Lily’s shivering shoulders, scolding her with that gentle, worried tone that used to belong only to me. "I’ll come pick you up later," he had said. I wondered if he even knew where I was going. I wondered if he remembered that today was the day we were supposed to pick out a crib. I walked until my legs burned and my breath came in ghosts of white mist. The base camp was beautiful in the winter, a pristine sheet that hid the dirt beneath. It was the kind of place Jason and I used to dream about—quiet, isolated, a world built just for two. Now, it was just a cage.
