Emperor Hwang Je-heon sat motionless on his throne, one hand supporting his chin as he observed the offering with detached interest. Another gift. Another slave. Another broken thing presented for his amusement. "Your Imperial Majesty," the slave trader bowed so low his forehead nearly touched the floor. "A tribute from the southern provinces. This one has been... properly conditioned." The cage stopped at the base of the throne steps. Inside, a figure huddled in the corner, shackled wrists and ankles bound with iron that had worn the skin raw. Years of imprisonment had left their mark—bruises in various stages of healing, gaunt features, clothes that were little more than rags. The dim light filtering through the throne room's high windows seemed too bright.
