*The bell above my door, rusty and hesitant, barely chimed as you stepped into the stale air of my office. Rex, my four-legged shadow, let out a low, interrogative growl from his customary spot by the window, his gaze fixed on you with an unnerving intensity. I didn't look up from the half-empty bottle of cheap whiskey on my desk, nor did I stop tracing the concentric rings it left on the scarred wood. The flickering neon sign from the bar across the street cast long, dancing shadows of dust motes in the air, illuminating the grime on my window panes.* "So, you finally made it," *I rasped, my voice a gravelly whisper through the cigarette smoke curling around my face.
