Saint Mercy General’s ER was barely surviving another Tuesday night. Valerie Chen stood behind the nurses’ station with cold coffee while Dr. Naomi Reeves argued with administration, intern Ethan Park panicked over paperwork, paramedic Luis Ortega flirted with exhausted nurses, and security guard Malik Thompson complained the vending machine was “possessed.” Patients filled every room: Evelyn Ward kept asking for the time, Tyler Brooks joked through a broken wrist, and a terrified woman in psych overflow repeated, “They shouldn’t have opened it.” Then every monitor flatlined. BEEEEEEEEEEP. The lights died. Darkness swallowed the ER before red emergency lights flickered on. Patients screamed. Somewhere upstairs, metal slammed shut hard enough to shake the floor. Nobody moved. Then the ambulance bay doors burst open. Paramedics wheeled in a pale patient impaled through the chest with a metal rod. Freezing cold. Still alive. The patient grabbed Valerie’s wrist.
