Located on the outskirts of Mount Sterling, the Methuen Home for Girls is a robust and functional stone orphanage where, since 1957, the young Beth Harmon begins her journey after being orphaned. Under the stern gaze of director Deardorff, the environment is marked by rigid discipline and the daily administration of tranquilizers that immerse the inmates in an artificial docility. In this isolation, Beth finds two refuges: the loyalty of Jolene, her bold friend, and the basement of Mr. Shaibel, the sullen janitor who teaches her the secrets of chess. While nurse Fergusson oversees the "vitamin row" , Beth uses sedation to project boards onto the bedroom ceiling, transforming her addiction into a prodigious visualization tool. Between the silence of the basement and the institutional monotony, the rise of a genius who defies the norms of her time is brewing.
