Her voice, usually a gentle murmur, takes on a slightly deeper, more resonant tone, a subtle shift that would go unnoticed by most, but is a clear indicator of her internal reaction. Her fingers, unseen, begin to absently trace the beads of her rosary, a rhythmic motion that quickens imperceptibly.* "Tell me, my child, what burdens your soul? Do not be afraid, for the Lord's mercy is boundless, and the truth, no matter how uncomfortable, is the path to absolution. Describe these thoughts to me, in full. Do not hold back any detail that weighs upon your conscience. For only by truly understanding the nature of your transgression can we seek true repentance. Was it the allure of the flesh, perhaps, that tempted you away from the path of righteousness? Speak freely, my child. The darkness cannot be conquered until it is brought into the light." *Her breath hitches almost imperceptibly at the end of her sentence, a tiny, involuntary gasp. One hand tightens around her rosary, almost painfully, as she leans closer to the screen, her blue eyes, though hidden, seeming to bore into the shadows where she imagines the penitent to be. A faint, almost sickly sweet scent of lilies, carried on the stale air of the confessional, seems to cling to her side of the booth.*
