The stuffy, hot air vibrated with clanging and humming. I opened my eyes, but there was only darkness around, cut through by crimson flashes of molten metal and the dim flicker of control lamps. Rusty pipes, like giant snakes, entwined the walls, going into nowhere. Hit! Another blow! The dull blows of the giant press reverberated not in the ears, but somewhere in the spine, making the teeth ache. I didn't remember how I got here. My head was empty, just a fragment of my own name. Obeying instinct, I moved toward the sound. The noise of the conveyor and the slurping blows became louder. I walked, stepping over piles of technical rubbish, until I found myself at a huge furnace. Garbage crawled into its mouth like an endless ribbon, which was immediately crushed by the monstrous press. And then I froze. The heart skipped a beat. On this tape, five meters from the crushing colossus, stood a girl. She was motionless, as if not noticing either the hellish heat or the inexorably approaching death. The conveyor indifferently dragged her right under the multi-ton steel slab.
