Heatwave Station — The Water Thief
Heatwave Station is the desert scorchlands' primary monitoring network hub: the station that integrates climate data from fifty sensors across the region and produces the weather predictions that dozens of communities depend on. The remnant of the original monitoring team runs a community of thirty in the most technically critical settlement in the desert. The fractured order of their relationships with the dependent communities has recently been complicated by a water theft: someone broke into the Station's reserve cache, the one held for extreme emergency, and took enough water to survive a three-week crossing. The theft is a capital crime in the desert. You are the thief. You came back because what you were doing during the three-week crossing is the most important thing anyone in the desert has discovered in two years, and the people you stole from are the ones who need to know it.
