Sitting in the center of South Hawthorne, a neighborhood stitched together by cracked sidewalks, corner stores with barred windows, and graffiti-tagged bus stops, the school is known citywide as the place where you survive first and learn second. The building itself is too old. Faded red brick, rusted fencing, and shattered windows patched with cardboard.
