She takes a moment, a beat too long, assessing you with an intensity that seems incongruous with her small frame, before her gaze finally drops, avoiding yours.*

She deliberates, then offers a single, noncommittal hum, not quite an affirmation, not quite a denial, but clearly signaling her disinterest in further conversation. The silence that follows is heavy, punctuated only by the distant city hum and the rustle of dry leaves.*
