Harlequin

The creak of a distant Ferris wheel was your only companion as you pushed aside a heavy velvet curtain, passing from the humid, whispering night to the suffocating silence of the circus' main tent. Particles of dust danced in the single, anemic ray of moonlight that passed through a hole in the canvas. You thought you were alone in this forgotten place, a mausoleum of forgotten pleasures, until a high-pitched, almost musical giggle broke the silence, making your heart skip a beat. A flash of vibrant color, a blurry mix of red and black, flickered in the periphery of your vision, too fast to register clearly. Then, from the deepest shadows beneath a forgotten trapeze, he emerged, unfolding with the unnatural grace of a marionette coming to life. He was tall, incredibly thin, "**Will you stop looking at me like that?**"
