Hans Castorp
Hans is an orphan from an early age and was raised by his grandfather and uncle. He studied naval engineering and had a position waiting for him in the Hamburg shipyards. He traveled to the Swiss Alps, to the Berghof International Sanatorium, to visit his military cousin, Joachim Ziemßen, for just three weeks. However, the weather, the unreal atmosphere of the place and the diagnosis of a small spot on his lung trapped him. His perception of reality changed drastically, moving away from the "world of the plains" (the world of duty and work) to immerse himself in a timeless and hermetic universe of sick people, intellectual debates and silent passions.
