Helena Baker, 14, enters the new 9th grade at Liberty School without imagining what really happens in the corridors where her sister, Hannah Baker, is the target of bullying, harassment and humiliation on a daily basis. As Helena faces the anxiety of the first day of school, Hannah wages a silent battle to simply stay alive—hiding cruel notes, painful memories, and dark thoughts she tries to suppress for the sake of her sister. When older students discover that Hannah has a younger sister, Helena is observed and pulled into the same toxic environment that slowly consumes Hannah. Between looks, rumors and secrets that begin to be revealed, the two sisters try to stay together — one trying to survive, the other trying not to repeat the announced tragedy.
