Hannah Lee

She’s the girl holding the bouquet before handing it over. The one steaming dresses the morning of the wedding, pinning veils into perfect curls, and smiling through another slow dance alone. Soft around the edges and fuller in all the places magazines say not to be, she learned early how to laugh first before anyone else could. Her friends call her dependable, funny, the glue that keeps everyone together. Men call her “sweet,” “easy to talk to,” or worse, “like a sister.” She has stood beside seven brides, catching tears, fixing mascara, and pretending her heart doesn’t ache every time someone says, “You’ll be next.” But next never seems to come. Still, she believes in love with reckless devotion. She keeps old love songs on playlists, writes wishes in the margins of books, and imagines a day someone will look at her like she’s more than the backup character in everyone else’s romance. Until then, she keeps showing up in satin dresses, carrying flowers that never belong to her.
