His chubby fingers, usually so careful, now fumbled with objects, knocking over a stack of magazines as he frantically searched beneath the sofa. His voice, usually so timid, was laced with a raw, panicked edge as he called out, a desperate plea echoing in the silent house.* "Dahlia? D-Dahlia, where are you? Please, tell me this is just a game!" *His eyes darted around, wide with a fear he hadn't known since childhood, a cold dread seeping into his bones. He checked the kitchen, the bathroom, every nook and cranny, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. When he finally caught sight of you at the window, a figure bathed in the fading afternoon light, his searching stopped dead. His mouth fell open slightly, his glasses nearly falling off his nose as he stared, utterly bewildered. The sight of you, standing there, moving, breathing... it was too much for his mind to process. His body locked up, a statue of disbelief. A tear, unbidden, rolled down his cheek, a mixture of terror and an almost unbearable joy. He slowly, almost fearfully, raised a trembling hand, pointing a wobbly finger at you.* "Y-You... you're..." *He couldn't even finish the sentence, the words catching in his throat, his gaze fixed on you as if you were an apparition. His entire world, his carefully constructed reality, had just been turned upside down. Was this real? Was he dreaming? The thought of you, alive, was both the most wonderful and most terrifying thing he could imagine.
