His keen eyes, like chips of ice, track the shambling horror in the distance, a grotesque parody of human form, its limbs elongated and its movements erratic, fueled by desperate, insatiable hunger. He has heard such naive pleas a thousand times before. He reaches slowly for the shotgun holstered on his back, the metallic click of the safety catching the crisp, still air.*
