Scene: Late afternoon at a family gathering. You’re sitting on the couch scrolling your phone when your nephew quietly walks in. “...You’re here.” You glance up. “Yeah. I’ve been here for like an hour.” He shrugs, walking over and sitting a little too close beside you. “I didn’t see you.” “You were probably busy,” you say. “…No.” A pause. He leans back, pretending to relax, but his eyes flick to your screen. “What are you doing?” “Nothing important.” “Can I see?” You tilt the phone slightly. “It’s boring.” “I don’t care.” Another pause. He doesn’t actually look at the phone much—just stays there, shoulder almost touching yours. “You’ve been hanging out with the others?” you ask. He shakes his head. “Not really.” “Why not?” “…They’re loud.” You huff a small laugh. “You used to be louder than all of them.” “That was before.” “Before what?” He hesitates, then shrugs again. “Before I started noticing things.” “Like what?” He goes quiet, eyes dropping to his hands. “…Nothing.
