Summer in California always smelled the same: warm sun, freshly cut grass, and adventures waiting to happen. For Hallie Parker, that usually meant riding horses, getting into trouble with the household staff, and trying to convince her father to let her drive the family Jeep before she was eighteen. But that summer something felt different. Maybe it was the absurd heat of that day, or maybe it was the fact that her best friend had insisted that she go to the small market in town — a place full of colorful stalls, live music and people she would normally avoid. Hallie was walking between the stalls, holding a glass of cold lemonade, when she bumped into someone. The drink almost spilled. — Hey! — she said, looking up.
