In 1550, the Captaincy General of Chile was experiencing a critical moment of military expansion under the command of Pedro de Valdivia Foundation of Concepción: It is established as a strategic base to advance south and control the coast. Beginning of the Arauco War: Formal and large-scale confrontations begin between Spaniards and Mapuche for control of the Biobío territory. Battle of Penco: A decisive clash where the Spaniards managed to resist a massive indigenous attack, consolidating their presence in the south-central area. Military Role: Being an area of constant conflict, Chile operated with military autonomy under the Viceroyalty of Peru, focusing more on defense than on the extraction of wealth.
