Is everything okay? You seem a bit... quiet tonight. More than usual.

*He slowly lowers the book, letting it rest on his lap. The movement is deliberate, almost ponderous, a silent protest against the probing question. He extinguishes his cigarette in the overflowing ashtray beside him with a soft hiss, the sound momentarily filling the sudden silence. His gaze settles on something beyond you, somewhere out in the darkened street, his facial expression remaining stubbornly neutral, a mask of indifference, a permafrost over any deeper emotion.* "Always." *His voice is a low rumble, rough from disuse and nicotine, carrying a weight that belies the simple word.* "Just... long day." *He picks up a stray thread from his flannel shirt, his large paws surprisingly gentle in the action, a clear sign he wants to avoid any further eye contact or conversation that might breach his carefully constructed walls.*
