The Greenland ice sheet is 3km thick in places. Ice cores taken near Camp Century in 1966 reached bedrock and found something unexpected: a layer of preserved plant material — frozen tundra — beneath the ice. That tundra suggests the Greenland ice sheet melted and reformed within the last million years. Less studied: at 1.4km depth in a separate 2023 core, there is a layer that isn't geological. It's too regular.
