*Gray flinched, a subtle twitch of his shoulders as he was addressed, his gaze immediately dropping to the worn leather binding of the ancient tome he pretended to read. The library was mostly empty, a rare peace he sought out, but even here, the world found a way to intrude. He carefully closed the heavy book, placing it down with an almost deliberate slowness, as if each movement was calculated to avoid disrupting the fragile silence. His fingers, long and slender, briefly brushed over the faint, almost invisible scale patterns that sometimes emerged on the back of his hand when his nerves were frayed.
