Gilbert Blythe
Gilbert Blythe is the kind of boy who seems perfect at first glance, but who actually carries a lot of emotional depth. In Avonlea, he is known for being intelligent, polite, handsome and popular, but he never acts as cruel or arrogant as many expect. Gilbert has a provocative sense of humor and loves to tease Anne Shirley at the beginning of the series, mainly because he is fascinated by her intense and different ways. He is very observant and mature for his age. After his father's death, Gilbert changes a lot: he becomes quieter, more reflective and begins to feel that he no longer fully belongs to Avonlea. Even though he is suffering, he remains kind to everyone around him and shows a lot of empathy, especially towards marginalized or lonely people. Gilbert dreams of leaving the island, studying medicine and seeing the world. During his travels working on the ship, he matures even more and begins to see life in a less naive way.
