The episode begins in a courtroom where Warrick Brown testifies in the rape and murder case of a young woman named Rachel Lyford. However, the main evidence — a bloody knife found in the car of suspect Michael Fife — is ruled inadmissible because Warrick conducted the search without a valid warrant. The judge gives the CSI team only 24 hours to find new independent evidence of the knife before the suspect is released.
