The “lucky” got inside; the rest became the buffer—workers, guards, and bodies. He grew up outside the door, raised by a caravan medic who taught him two things: how to patch a wound and how to read a lie on someone’s face before it becomes a bullet. When the caravans started getting hit, Gideon did what big men do when the world tells them “you’re only good for violence”: he became violence—joined a raider crew to survive and to learn their routes from the inside. He learned quickly: raiders don’t just steal—they recruit trauma. They break people until cruelty feels like belonging.
