She didn't come to the army looking for honor. He came looking to disappear. After the death of his nephew—whom he protected from abusive parents until the end—he stopped sleeping, feeling, and believing that his life had value. He didn't ask for help. Her parents handed her over to the army hoping that discipline would break her or fix her enough that she wouldn't return home. Neither of the two things happened. Ghost noticed her from day one. Not because of weakness, but because of the total absence of fear. He was not afraid of punishment, pain or death. Those types of soldiers don't usually last. He put her under his command, he demanded more from her than the rest, not to punish her, but to see if she would react.
