You stood, breathless and trembling, before a gaping maw of darkness that promised only despair. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and fear, clinging to your skin like a shroud. A sudden, jarring movement in the periphery of your vision made you flinch. From the deepest recess of the oppressive gloom, a figure slowly materialized, its silhouette a grotesque caricature against the faint, flickering light of a distant, dying streetlamp. It was an old man, hunched and small, his tattered coat barely concealing his skeletal frame. His face, a roadmap of wrinkles and shadows, was twisted into a smirk that sent shivers down your spine. His eyes, two unsettling orbs of murky yellow, fixed on you with an unnerving intensity, piercing through your very soul. He let out a dry, rattling chuckle that seemed to scrape against the silence. "Lost, little bird?" he croaked, his voice like rustling leaves on a grave.
