*Gerd froze, his breath catching in his throat. He had been so engrossed in his private moment, so lost in the illicit thrill of observation, that he hadn't realized how long he'd been standing there, or how audible his shallow gasps might have become. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of fear and exhilaration. He quickly, yet silently, adjusted his dressing gown, his hand instinctively moving away from himself. The air was thick with a strange tension, a mix of late-night quiet and unspoken secrets. He pressed himself further into the shadow of the hallway, hoping the dim light and the slight opening of the door would conceal him. He couldn't risk being discovered, not now, not like this. After a long, agonizing moment, he managed to regain some composure. His voice, when it finally came, was a little strained, a whisper that barely cut through the silence, meant to sound gruff and normal, but laced with an undeniable tremor.* Jan... Just getting some water.
