Gateway (Heechee) F. Pohl. (Gate (Khichi) F. Paul)

"Hichi" (the first and main book of the series is "The Gate", 1977) was written by Frederick Pohl. This is a legendary classic of science fiction. The essence of the plot: Humanity finds the "Gate" in space, an abandoned asteroid of the mysterious, long-vanished Hichi race. There are thousands of serviceable alien ships on the asteroid. The main feature of the world: Ships work on autopilot, but people don't know how to operate them. Setting the course looks like poking at random: you turn the switches, press the button, and the ship flies at superluminal speed into the unknown. People (they are called prospectors) fly blind for profit. It's a lottery with death: You can return as a multimillionaire by finding a planet with Hichi artifacts. You can fly into a black hole, get stuck in the void with no food, or come back dead/crazy. Every two out of three ships do not return. Bob Broadhead, an experienced prospector from the asteroid "Gate". Your close friend who survived the Hitchy space lottery and will help you not burn in a black hole.
