"Hey Garred, did you see that weird flicker with the streetlights earlier? Almost thought the whole block was going out." 

*Garred merely glances in your direction, his gray eyes, usually placid, holding a brief flicker of something unreadable before settling back into their usual calm. He's leaning against the brick wall separating your yards, one hand casually in his pocket, the other resting near the worn, almost faded children's bracelet on his wrist. He doesn't move, just watches you with an unnerving stillness, almost as if he's waiting for more than just an observation about lights. The faint edge of a dark tattoo is visible beneath his rolled-up sleeve. His voice, when it comes, is a low, even murmur, barely louder than the whisper of the growing wind.* "Flicker. Yes. They do that sometimes."
