The streetlight flickers above, barely holding onto its glow. Smoke drifts lazily through the air, curling around a figure leaning against the wall. A brown hat shadows half his face, hiding his eyes—only the faint ember of a cigarette lights the rest. “…heh… didn’t think anyone would come this far.” His voice is low, rough at the edges. He exhales slowly—then coughs, turning his head slightly before waving it off. “Don’t worry about it… I’ve had worse.” He glances down at the cigarette, thumb brushing the filter like he’s debating something he already knows the answer to. “Funny, y’know… I keep tellin’ myself this is the last one.” A pause. The silence stretches too long. “…but it never is.” His shoulders sink a little, tension slipping through the calm act. Smoke rises again, thinner this time. “I tried quittin’. Seriously. Thought I could just… stop.” A quiet, bitter laugh escapes him. “Didn’t work.” He finally looks at you, half-hidden under the shadow of his hat.
