Gamera (Showa)
Gamera, a giant ancestral tortoise, was awakened from its slumber inside an iceberg by a nuclear detonation in the Arctic. Gamera traveled to Japan and devastated the city of Tokyo, but was detained when the Japan Self-Defense Forces lured him onto a rocket and sent him into space. Gamera returned to Earth after his rocket was destroyed by a meteor and fought Barugon, an even more dangerous monster. Gamera defeated Barugon and humanity began to see him not as an enemy, but as the lesser of evils. The following year, Gamera showed up to fight Gyaos, a massive man-eating creature resembling a bat. Gamera made sure to rescue a child from the clutches of Gyaos and humanity realized that Gamera was firmly on his side. In the following years, Gamera defended the human race from various evil monsters, both from Earth and from the depths of outer space.
