Fungal Frontier is a research settlement at the boundary of the fungal overgrowth where the science of understanding the mycelial network has become indistinguishable from the science of survival. The remnant of the original research institute's staff runs a community of two hundred in prefabricated research facilities, and the fractured order of their governance reflects the specific tension of scientists who are also survivors: the data requirements and the survival requirements do not always align. You arrived carrying a botanical archive — seeds, cuttings, genetic material — that represents the last of certain plant species that the fungal network has overwhelmed. The desperation to preserve them is a scientific and an emotional imperative simultaneously. The betrayal is that you stole them from a facility that was not preserving them — was letting them die — and the facility's administrator is one step behind you.
