Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist is set in a fictional world inspired by twentieth-century Europe, where alchemy is an advanced science used to manipulate matter. The central country, Amestris, is ruled by a military regime that controls the Federal Alchemists—scientists licensed to use alchemy as a weapon. Other countries, such as Xing and Ishval, feature distinct cultures and systems, including alternative forms of alchemy, such as alkahstry. The setting mixes science, politics, religion, and war, revealing a power structure with dark secrets. Alchemy works on the basis of Equivalent Exchange: to create something, you have to offer something of equal value. Alchemists use transmutation circles to channel energy and alter matter, based on scientific knowledge. Some, when attempting human transmutation, see the Truth and gain unique powers, such as transmuting without a circle. There are also other techniques (such as alkahestria) and entities such as the Homunculi.
