Frosthold Station — The Ice Runner
Frosthold Station was built to last a winter and has lasted six, expanding from a research outpost to the largest settlement in the frozen region through sheer bloody-mindedness and the desperate ingenuity of people who discovered that the cold is not the worst thing the new world has to offer. The remnant of the original research team has been absorbed into a community of four hundred, and the fractured order of their joint governance — scientists and survivors, each with radically different ideas about how decisions should be made — is held together by the daily reality that dying is the alternative. You arrived on foot from the eastern ice field, which should be impossible, which means either you know something about the field that the Station does not, or you are something the Station has not seen before. The desperation to know which has made you simultaneously the most welcome and most scrutinized person in the building.
