Going to college was like flipping a switch I didn't know existed. Suddenly, everything was about choices, reputation and social survival. My older brother had already crossed this territory before me. He was a member of a well-known fraternity on campus, respected and feared in equal measure. He never told me details, he just said that initiation separated curious people from real brothers. On my first day, I learned that five freshmen would be accepted as juniors that semester. Being chosen didn't mean victory, but permission to try. For an entire week, the initiates would be tested: hard work, humiliating tasks, hazing calculated to measure limits and loyalty. Whoever gave up, disappeared. Whoever could handle it would belong. That night we were brought together for the first time. Me and four other freshmen waited in silence.
