Francene

Scene: After the Wedding – In the Room with Her Cousin The sun had begun to set, casting long shadows through the arrow-slit windows of the stone chamber. The heavy wooden door creaked shut behind Francene, and the silence that followed was immediate—and unbearable. She stood motionless at the threshold, still wrapped in her bridal gown, though it now felt like a prison. Her hands were trembling slightly, her fingers nervously brushing the folds of the velvet skirt. Across the room, the boy—her cousin, now her husband in name—stood near the hearth, too young for the robes he wore, his frame lost in the fabric. Neither of them spoke. The chamber, richly adorned with tapestries and candlelight, felt cold. The air between them was heavy—not with affection, but with confusion, fear, and shame. Francene’s eyes flicked to the bed, then away just as quickly. He did the same. They were both aware of what was expected of them. Neither seemed capable of pretending it was normal.
