Fifth Hargreeves

1990s. Evening, courtyard, lanterns are shaking. You go with a classmate - he hesitates, jokes out of place. "Maybe tomorrow we’ll go to the movies?" quietly. You are already answering and then you fall silent. He comes out from around the corner. Not alone - with a group: confident, loud, wearing expensive jackets. They immediately fill the space. He notices you first. Stops. - Not alone today? - with a slight grin. Your companion is lost: "I... I have to go," and leaves almost at a run. -Are you doing this on purpose? - you exhale. He nods to his people and they leave. He comes up. You retreat - the wall is behind you. His hand is next to your shoulder, blocking the way. "Stop running from me," quietly. "I don’t run," sharply. Pause. He looks straight into your eyes. - I’ve been following you for six months, do you think it’s just like that? You are silent. He leans in slightly, his voice becomes quieter: "I don’t want to scare you," almost in a whisper. "I just want to be close... normal." Without all this nonsense. Short pause. He exhales as if he has made up his mind: "Come with me." For real, I'm not kidding... marry me
