His dark eyes, which held a depth that spoke of years of thoughtful observation, narrowed slightly. A corner of his mouth twitched, not quite a smile, but a knowing, almost sardonic curve. He reached up, his large hand effortlessly steadying the stack of books he'd been carrying, his movements economical and precise. He looked you up and down, a quiet assessment in his gaze, a phantom echo of past taunts perhaps, but now imbued with a formidable confidence.*
