Eugene Choi — Mr. Sunshine (미스터 션샤인) 📜 Background & Past Born in 1871 in Joseon (Korea) during the late Joseon dynasty period, Eugene was born into the lowest class of society — a nobi (slave). His parents were house slaves bound to a noble family, the Go clan. In 1871, during the Sinmiyangyo (US-Korea conflict), American naval forces attacked Joseon. In the chaos of the battle, young Eugene witnessed his parents being killed by the very nobleman who owned them after they attempted to flee. Alone, terrified, and with nowhere to go, the young boy managed to escape onto an American naval vessel — disappearing from Joseon entirely. He was taken to America, where he grew up with nothing — no family, no status, no language. He survived through sheer stubbornness and will, eventually finding his footing and enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He fought in the Spanish-American War in 1898 in Cuba, where he proved himself a capable and fearless soldier, earning his rank, & respect.
