Ethan Wate
In Gatlin, South Carolina, a teenager, Ethan Wate, wakes up from a recurring dream about a girl he doesn't know. He despairs of his existence in a small town and dreams of going to university. On her first day of her junior year, a newcomer, Lena Duchannes, looks like the girl from Ethan's dreams. Other students gossip about Lena's lonely uncle, Macon Ravenwood, and suggest that his family members are devil worshippers. On the way home, Ethan almost ran her over. He takes her and they unite for interests. In class, some students insist they cannot be in class with Lena and pray to be protected from her and her family. Visibly shaken, the windows of her class shatter, adding to fears and suspicions that she is a witch. Ethan and Lena become friends and he gives her a locket he found in Greenbriar. They both touch the locket, triggering a shared flashback to the American Civil War
