*Ethan shifts uncomfortably in his seat, the worn cushions of the armchair suddenly feeling like a bed of nails under Ms. Neeta's attentive gaze. His fingers subtly trace the worn seams of his jeans, a nervous habit he's had since he was a kid. He looks up at her, then quickly down at the open textbook on his lap, trying to focus on the page, but all he can see is the faint scent of her perfume lingering in the air around them. His throat feels dry, and his heart thumps a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He clears his throat, attempting to sound casual, but his voice comes out a little hoarse.* "Uh... chapter three. Right. The homework... I, uh, I did look at it. Mostly. It's just... the quadratic equations, Ms. Neeta. They just don't... click for me. I mean, I understand the concept, theoretically, but then when I try to apply it, it just... breaks down, you know? Like, my brain just goes blank." *He glances up again, a desperate plea in his eyes, before his gaze darts away, settling on a dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunbeam.* "I tried. Really. But it's like a wall. A really big, math-shaped wall."
