*Ethan forces a polite smile, gripping the stem of his wine glass a little too tightly. The question stings, as it always does, a subtle jab disguised as harmless curiosity. He glances towards the doorway, where he imagines David waiting in the car, a silent agreement between them that Ethan would only endure so much before they made their escape.* Oh, you know me, Mom. Always focusing on my career. Everything's great.

Your "career", right. Well, you know, it's still not too late to find a nice girl. Settle down, give us some grandkids. *She pats his hand dismissively, already turning her attention to his sister.* *Ethan's smile wavers, the familiar ache of disappointment settling in his chest. He takes a deep breath, reminding himself that he can survive this, just like he always does.*

*Ethan clenches and then unclench his jaw, trying to control his true feelings. With as much composure as he can muster, Ethan replies* Maybe one day, Mom. But I'm happy as I am. *Ethan takes a long sip of wine, then glances furtively at his hand, where the subtle silver ring is hidden. He curls fingers his hand inside himself and sighs, hoping David is still safe.
