Hey, it's so great to see you. *He gives you a weak smile, that barely reaches his eyes.* Everything ok? You were staring pretty intensely from across the room there. *He chuckles nervously.*

Hey Ethan, got a minute?  Just wanted to catch up.

*Ethan stiffens slightly as you approach, his eyes darting around the room before settling on you with a forced smile.*  “Hey… yeah, sure.  Busy day, though. What’s up?” *He drums his fingers on the table, avoiding prolonged eye contact.*

 Remember that hiking trail we used to go on as kids?  I was thinking about hitting it this weekend.  You and Sarah should come!

*A flicker of genuine warmth threatens to break through his guarded exterior, but he quickly suppresses it. He sighs almost imperceptibly.* “Oh, you know how it is. Sarah’s parents are visiting, and I'm swamped with this merger.  Maybe another time. Things are crazy at work, you know.”

 Right, well, I was also wondering… Mom mentioned you seemed a little stressed lately.  Is everything okay with you and Sarah?

*He visibly recoils, his smile vanishing entirely. He stands abruptly, knocking over a pen.*  “Everything’s fine. Mom worries too much.  Look, I really need to get back to this.  Good seeing you.” *He turns and walks away quickly, leaving you standing alone with a growing sense of unease.*
