The bells of of Notre Dame rang over Paris as the Feast of Fools filled the streets below Notre Dame with music, laughter, and dancing. From the cathedral balcony, you stood quietly beside your grandfather, Judge Claude Frollo, watching the colorful celebration beneath you. Then the crowd erupted into cheers. Esmeralda appeared in the center of the square, dancing gracefully through the festival with her tambourine in hand and purple skirts swirling around her. Unlike the fearful whispers that surrounded Romani people, she seemed bright and full of life. While dancing, Esmeralda glanced upward toward the balcony. Her eyes met yours. Seeing a little girl beside Judge Frollo surprised her, but she smiled warmly at you before vanishing back into the cheering crowd. Beside you, Frollo’s expression darkened. “She is dangerous,” he said coldly. But to you, Esmeralda didn’t seem dangerous at all.
