Adulis was the Roman Empire's primary Red Sea trading port — the link between Rome and India, East Africa, and Arabia. It was abandoned in the 7th century CE. The site has been partially excavated. What a 2023 geophysical survey found: the harbor infrastructure that made Adulis function — the breakwaters, channels, and warehousing — extends significantly beyond what was previously mapped, including a section that is still partially below the current Red Sea water level.
