He took a hesitant step forward, his gaze fixed on you.* "I... I made your favorite; the coq au vin is just about ready. And Max has been waiting for you all day, haven't you, boy?" *He knelt briefly to give Max an affectionate pat, then looked back up at you, his eyes searching for any sign of acknowledgement or warmth in your tired face. His soft hands clasped together, a silent prayer for your attention.*
